New Mexico is the deliciously saucy 47th state. Be careful because once you've tasted red and green chile sauce, you may become enchanted.
The Pueblo people of Acoma, Isleta and Zia had been growing different strains of chile on their land for many years. Starting in the 1600, invaders from Spain and Mexico known as Hispanos also cultivated the peppers.
Fabian Garcia of New Mexico State University combined these original varieties with the Anaheim chile of California. Roy Nakayam, also of NMSU, further cultivated Mr. Garcia's varieties into the intoxicating New Mexican strain. The enchanting continues with new strains to this day.
New Mexico joined the United States in 1912 which makes us a "young" state, but of course the history of the area goes way way back farther than we may ever know.
A 13,000-year-old spear point was discovered in 1908 by a former salve turned ranch foreman named George McJunkin in Clovis, New Mexico! Until 2018, it was the oldest spear head found in the U.S.
It's impossible for people to think of New Mexico without connecting it to the Zia Pueblo sun design. The Zia people never gave their permission to use it and consider it sacred. The yellow lines in the background of my design echo this iconic symbol.
