My Sunflower Skull Queen design is laser-etched on a 1" wood heart, hand-painted and crowned by a dyed magnesite bead.
My little laser is cute, but unpredictable. I never know exactly how dark the design will burn but I pick two that are the closest match for each pair.
Check out my Apache plume and Chokecherry designs, too. Search "laser."
The New Mexico sunflower is desert beautiful and desert tough.
After the August rains, our sunflower show begins. Of course the seeds are nutritious and delicious but also were used for dozens of remedies.
Cows love the leaves and fibers from the stems are used to make paper.
For some native warriors and hunters, the sunflower represents courage. They would eat sunflower cakes and sprinkle powdered sunflower on their clothes to stay strong and positive.
The petals of the sunflower can be boiled to make a lovely yellow dye and the seeds can be used for either purple or black dye.
